Why We Dehydrate Our Bones and Chews (Not Freeze-Dry Them)

Natural chews with purpose – here’s why we choose the air-dried route.

At Natura Paws, we freeze-dry most of our raw snacks to lock in nutrients while keeping them shelf-stable and lightweight. But when it comes to bones and long-lasting chews like kangaroo ribs, chicken necks, roo spines and tail tips, we take a different approach.

We air-dry them — and for good reason!

🦴 Why Not Freeze-Dry Bones and Chews?

Freeze-drying is brilliant for soft organs and muscle meats — it preserves flavour, nutrients, and texture without cooking the food. But bones and chews are a different story. When bones are freeze-dried, they become brittle and fragile. That might sound harmless, but brittle bones can splinter easily and pose a serious risk to your dog’s health — especially when chewed with gusto.

That’s why we don’t freeze-dry our bones.

💨 Why Air-Drying Is Safer and Smarter

Instead, we slowly dehydrate our bones and chews at a low temperature over a long period of time. This method gently removes moisture while keeping the bone strong but chewable — not crumbly.

The benefits?

Maintains density and strength — perfect for jaw exercise and dental scraping
Reduces risk of splintering — safer chewing experience
Preserves nutrients naturally — no preservatives needed
Great for teeth and gums — nature’s toothbrush in action

🐕 Healthy, Enriching, and Long-Lasting

Air-dried bones like our kangaroo ribs and chicken necks are the perfect combo of entertainment, enrichment, and nutrition. They're rich in natural calcium, phosphorus, and connective tissue like glucosamine, all of which help support your dog’s bones, joints, and teeth.

They also satisfy the natural urge to chew, which can reduce boredom and anxiety in dogs of all sizes.

In Short? We Let the Bones Be Bones.
We believe in safe, species-appropriate chews that work in harmony with your pet’s body. That’s why we dehydrate bones and chews — never freeze-dry them.
