Each collar is made using a traditional backstrap loom, a centuries-old technique still practiced by Indigenous women in Chiapas, Mexico. The loom is tied to a fixed object in front and wrapped around the weaver’s waist, allowing her to control the tension with her body as she sits and works. This intimate, body-connected process gives the artisan complete control over each thread, resulting in intricate, vibrant patterns that reflect her culture, creativity, and skill. Every collar is a true one-of-a-kind creation, woven with care, tradition, and soul.
The backstrap weaving technique used to make our Mexican collars dates back thousands of years to the ancient Maya civilisation. Mayan women were master weavers, and textile creation was considered both an art and a sacred act. Using looms made from wood and thread, tied to a tree or post and wrapped around their waist, they created intricate patterns rich with cultural symbols, spiritual meaning, and family heritage.
Each design told a story—of the natural world, of ancestry, of community. Passed down from mother to daughter for generations, this weaving tradition continues today in the highlands of Chiapas, where Indigenous women keep the art alive. By purchasing a handmade collar, you’re supporting not just a product, but a living history of Mayan artistry, resilience, and cultural pride
